Every year 11 million tons of plastic end up in our seas, endangering the lives of 1.4 million species living underwater.
This enormous phenomenon not only threatens marine life, but also human health and the balance of the entire planet.
We know you've asked yourself at least 11 million times: "What can I do to change things?" or "There are so many ways to act, which is the best one?".
There are no right or wrong ways to act for the sea, every gesture is important, but at Ogyre we have decided to reduce the damage caused by plastic by fishing it out of the sea.
How?
Through Fishing for Litter: a method of collecting plastic that directly involves those who live by the sea every day – the fishermen.
Every day, fishermen all over the world have to contend with plastics that not only pollute the seas but also heavily affect the quality of the fish they catch.
Thanks to fishing boats, we collect waste from the sea and bring it to land. The collected plastic is then transformed into yarn, which we reuse to create our products.
One of the main advantages of Fishing for Litter is that it does not require the implementation of specific means or technologies: we directly use the fishermen's nets, the same ones they use to catch fish.
Fishing for Litter has a huge environmental impact; a fishing boat can collect up to 200 kilos of plastic per month depending on the seas and areas. In addition to having a direct impact on the health of the sea, it also brings indirect benefits to all local economies.
Firstly, the removal of marine litter by fishing vessels helps to keep beaches and coastlines clean, with a significant impact on tourism industry revenues, and on fishing and aquaculture activities.
For us at Ogyre, plastic in the seas is the greatest urgency of recent years: if the ocean is in danger, life itself is in danger.
Our goal is to give people the opportunity to act for environmental protection every day through ordinary gestures, such as buying a consumer product that is the result of a real action of plastic recovery from the seas.
From consumers, you become contributors.
While you were reading, 1 million plastic bottles were produced worldwide. We are sure that after reading this article, you will tell a friend to avoid, for example, buying single-use plastic bottles.
This is also a way of taking concrete action and being part of the change.
The more we are, the more it works.
